2011 MRHA HealthSpell in Western Maryland

Who: Middle School students attending schools within Allegany, Garrett, and Washington Counties

What: Spelling Bee using words that are indigenous to the health and medical fields

When: June 4, 2011 @10am

Why: To instill in our children an interest and awareness of the health and medical fields through a competitive spelling bee offering winners scholarships for college education, as well as a guaranteed placement in a health career exploration program.

Awards: First place winner receiving $3,000 towards future college tuition went to William Hunter Barclay of Frostburg, MD and Mount Savage Middle School. Second place winner receiving $2,000 scholarship went to Cassandra Li of Hagerstown, MD from Smithsburg Middle School. Third place winner receiving $1,000 scholarship went to Karli Hakala of Frostburg, MD and Mount Savage Middle School.

The MRHA hosted a similar event in April 2009 and April 2010. For past winners of the Eastern Shore event please visit Past Spelling Bees   The MRHA establishes a scholarship fund for HealthSpell winners to be awarded when students are accepted by a college or university, at which time, their scholarship winnings will be transferred directly to the college or university they are attending.

Dick Yoder of WCBC acted as Master of Ceremonies of the event. Pamela Christoffel, Scottie Samples (WMAHEC), Earl Stoner, Health Officer, Washington County planned the event. We also had student volunteers from the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) program and the Allegany College of Maryland Occupational Therapy Assistant(OTA) program.
